Where Have We Been?

We've been busily learning a variety of topics and haven't found time to blog!
In reading we have discussed and practiced determining cause and effect situations. We've also been working hard to increase our fluency...we need to be reading 87 words per minute by the end of the year!
In writing, we have mastered writing letters and personal narratives. Soon we'll be researching an animal and writing a report about it.
Math has also kept us busy! With telling time, fractions and adding money, our brains are packed with information.

Next up: Story problems with another second grade classroom and maybe even some multiplication! :)

Don't worry, we'll blog too!

Unsolicited Compliments

In our classroom we have a marble jar. Our class' goal is to fill the jar so we can earn a celebration!

We get small marbles when we follow directions, quiet down quickly and have good behavior. We get medium-sized marbles when we get unsolicited compliments from adults in our building, which is our FAVORITE part of having a marble jar!

"Wow 2nd graders! Great line!"
"Ms. Booth, your class is so quiet!"
"Look at the amazing learning that's happening right now, great job 2nd graders!"

These are just some of the unsolicited compliments we have received this year...and believe us, silent cheers don't do them the justice they deserve.

Thank you to all of the teachers, parents and principals who have given us unsolicited compliments! We promise we will continue to work hard, follow directions and stay quiet in the halls so we can earn more medium-sized marbles!

Checking In

Happy 40th day of school! It's unbelievable to think that we have been in school for two and a half months. I wanted to check in and ask a couple of questions.

Students, have you...

1. Learned more words and reading strategies? If so, which ones?

2. Become more confident in your math skills? Like skip counting and double digit addition/subtraction?

3. Grown into a second grade learner who listens to their teacher the first time and follows the Monaco RULE?

I hope you can answer YES to all three questions! It's good for us to think about what we are learning and how we can help ourselves to become better learners.

I am looking to the learning that the next 40+ days brings :)

What's your favorite book so far?

This week the children in the yellow reading group will be answering this question during their independent writing time. Then, they will be asked to post it on the blog! I'm excited for their first blog post and I am looking forward to commenting on their thoughtful work.

Before I allow the children to explore the idea, I'm going to answer the question myself!

My favorite book I have read this year is "Imogene's Antlers," because it tells a hilarious story about a girl who grows antlers while she is sleeping! The solutions to her antler problem are creative...but nothing beats the fantastic ending the author wrote!

Check back soon for thoughts from seven readers who have very different opinions!

Happy Reading!

Ms. Booth
